Outside of work, he enjoys cheering on the Capitals, spending time with his wife, and unwinding with a good TV show.
At Wheaton Animal Hospital, you’re considered part of our extended family. Many of our team members have been here for decades, building lasting relationships with the pets and people we serve. That kind of continuity means you’ll always see familiar, trusted faces who know your pet’s history and treat them with gentle, individualized care every time you visit.
Dr. Gary Schwartz has been with our hospital since the beginning and is known for his expertise in exotic animal care. He welcomes all kinds of pets — from snakes and turtles to birds, fish, rodents, dogs, and cats.
Passionate about making a difference in his patients’ lives, Dr. Schwartz is a dedicated caregiver and a lifelong learner.
Outside of work, he enjoys cheering on the Capitals, spending time with his wife, and unwinding with a good TV show.
A proud graduate of Michigan State University, Dr. Amy Scheiner has been a cornerstone of our practice for nearly 40 years.
She is passionate about problem-solving to deliver the best possible care and is deeply committed to nurturing the human-animal bond.
When not at the hospital, Dr. Scheiner competes in agility and scent work with her dogs, Devyn and Tryggur, and enjoys reading, cross-stitching, horseback riding, and travel — including a recent veterinary expedition to the Galápagos.
Dr. Robyn Johnson, a Michigan State University alum, has been with our team since 2002, with a brief hiatus.
She values building long-term relationships with clients and takes pride in watching pets grow from playful puppies and kittens into healthy adults. In addition to general practice, Dr. Johnson has emergency medicine experience.
She enjoys theater and serves on the board of the Young Victorian Theatre Company. At home, she shares life with her twin children and two beloved chihuahuas.
Heather Donovan has been a driving force behind our hospital since 1989, ensuring smooth operations and warm, welcoming experiences for every client.
With decades of dedication, she’s had the joy of seeing generations of families return with their pets.
Heather lives with her husband and five cats, and her calm, cat-savvy approach helps even our most hesitant feline visitors feel at ease.
With a long-standing reputation and a passion for every kind of pet, Wheaton Animal Hospital blends traditional veterinary care with personalized attention and species-specific knowledge. We’re proud to serve a diverse and devoted community, offering services tailored to dogs, cats, and a wide range of exotic pets.
Since opening our doors in 1974, we’ve been a trusted name in the Kensington and Wheaton area. We’re honored to care for multiple generations of pets from the same families, and even see some of the same friendly faces we met decades ago. That kind of history means something to us, and we’re proud to continue earning your trust, visit after visit.
Not every vet is equipped to care for snakes, turtles, guinea pigs, birds, or fish—but we are. Dr. Schwartz and our team offer experienced, species-appropriate care for a wide range of exotic pets, including reptiles, small mammals, birds, and aquatic animals. Whether your parrot needs a wellness check or your bearded dragon isn’t eating, we’re here to help.
Our team isn’t just experienced; they’re here for the long haul. Many of our team members have worked at Wheaton Animal Hospital for multiple decades. With a shared passion for pets, our team builds deep, lasting relationships with the families we serve. From remembering your dog’s favorite treat to recognizing when something’s just a little “off” with your cat, that kind of consistency is rare, and it makes a difference in your pet’s care.
